Let's talk breeding goals for the Hanoverian....

Should we? Have we put too much emphasis on Sandro Hit and the few other ubermovers? Have we begun to breed the rideability out of our horses? Etc. I for one am missing the older-fashioned Hanoverians. You know, the ones that looked like warmbloods instead of heavy TBs. The ones with the calm, unflappable temperaments and the heavy, but steady rhythmical gaits. I am seeing now too many Hanoverians that are not suitable in temperament and gait for the average amateur to ride. And we don't have enough professionals to ride these horses. I have a lovely old-style mare by Frappant....and I know that there aren't many Frappant mares out there to begin with, so I feel pretty lucky. She has the best temprament and looks A LOT like her sire. She has 'W' breeding on the bottom and has been bred mostly to jumper-bred stallions but this year she is in foal to Wolkentanz II . I think that Frappant is often overlooked as a sire .

I love her looks, but her attitude is a bit more spookier than i expected. What would be a good example of a stallion(s) that would have that attitude? I'm a novice with the hanoverians, i do keep trying to learn more, I've had my mare for 5 years now and just never have found the right time to breed her. My daughter rides her more than i do, she's more jumper than anything but we're military so move around a lot. My twh just went through colic surgery in late may so spending 3k to get my horse bred fell off my priority list unfortunately. I'd love to breed her just to keep and train for myself. She's had 2, colt & a filly, out of winterprinz before i bought her.

Posts: 59 (08/03/10 06:05:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Remember that the mare has 50% of the genetic equation and you cannot readily predict which genes she will pass. Also, her foals will be raised by her and will, therefore, be taught by her how to react to situations. So, you are asking a lot to produce an unflappable foal out of such a mare. Not saying it cannot be done, but just wanting you to know more about the process. And yes, you'd want to breed her to a stallion that is, himself, very easy and steady in the mind. My favorites for that are both deceased, but are available through frozen. Gourvenor and Diamont come to mind. You will hear horror stories about some Diamont foals but remember that he was bred to hundreds of mares (many that were plain crazy) in hopes that his good mind would prevail. Many years ago I owned a fabulous Prince Thatch mare (out of a pretty substantial Lanthan mare I owned) and while in Germany I mentioned to Ludwig that I thought she was waaaaaaaaaay too light, his response was that there was no such thing as too light-flash forward to her inpection 3 years later...he dinged her for being too light-all I could do was laugh. I thought then, that there was too much emphasis on going the "other way" now ten years later, it seems I wasn't wrong. Also funny that you picked out the G line. I also mentioned to him that I was sad to see the emphasis moving away from the G line and his response was, "you can never go wrong with a G line mare". I had two of them then and have two of them now. I have retired EM Graphitti, Gold Luck's full sister-she brought me two wonderful Royal Prince offspring (one of them I still own and one of them is owned by her "aunt" Mo). I also have a GL daughter, she is currently for sale but FULL of talent and loves to work. I felt that there was too much emphasis on Weltmeyer just MHO as well as Lauries Crusader, now it is Sandro Hit...many of these horses, although fabulous, are not always the best prospect for our market-the typical American AA rider...wish I had mile long legs!! I love a horse who I can depend on, is not spooky and wants to work for me.

Posts: 135 (08/15/10 03:07:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	3rd was Benidettos half sister by Londontime out of SPS Crispy Sweet (Cordoba/Westwall). Very elegant refined mare, with super hindleg. The mares were of excellent quality (since this is the former Loui WIegels show, and now they have a second selection, no longer enough to win the mare show!) Congrats to Leatherdales on their new mare by Damsey! she is bred by very good friends of mine in Denmark, and they too are very happy! their danish owner, an older couple, was crying. It was all very touching!!

I don't think it is fair to say that one then looses the temperament! I know I am biased with Benidetto, but he is a lighter horse, although not THAT much blood. So it is very possible, just have to be selective.

Posts: 275 (08/15/10 07:31:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As Linda noted a "lighter" horse is desired than was prevalent some years ago --- but at a recent judges' clinic in Germany, Dr Christmann said that the verband feels they have enough "lightness" now, with TB or AA blood in most horses' recent generations. They do not want to go finer, and are concerned to keep some substance, and good-sized solid feet, as the "foundation" is so important in performance horses. As well, correctness of the gaits, and swing through a well-connected back remain very important.

Now I finally own a G line Breeding Stallion and a highly reputable fellow breeder recommended breeding him to a 'G line' mare to produce outstanding ridability with an overall good jump...I can't wait to see the results next spring! I like the fact that you can find Hanoverians (and other warmbloods) of all shapes and sizes, as long as the gaits and carrying power are preserved. I of course, am one of those people with mile long legs, so it would work out better for me personally if everyone went for as much substance as possible, but I think I may be in the minority there. As for personality, I guess I expect warmbloods in general to be a bit quirky. I think the athletic horses often are. Mind you, 'quirky' doesn't mean "can't be ridden by an amateur," rather "Don't expect everything to be easy." "[...]and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. OMG I agree with you 100% If I were able to breed my Hanoverian mare (she is a weltmeyer grand daughter) it would be to something that LOOKS like a warm blood, is unflappable, and will have wonderful rideability. Luckily, she looks more like the older style and not the new style (that looks like a TB). Posts: 3 (04/08/11 12:46:07) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Personally, I LOVE the old style but my comment is something that was brought up at the MAHB Nov inspection and I also saw it in the Hanoverian Mag from that inspection. Poor hind leg conformation seems to be an issue. I purchased a Royal Prince/Warkant colt and the mare got dinged for her hind leg ( and had received a 6 for hind legs at her German inspection). Otherwise they loved her old blood and ability to produce, but a lot of hind legs were knocked that day. Colt is better than mom behind.

While I would never want to offenc any owner, and there are many different types of lovely stallions, I personally do worry that we may have gone too far in our efforts to lighten/refine. There has been a lot of discussion about the horses getting too large for the average rider to collect and enjoy which may be true, my concern is that we not go too far the other direction. My mother taught me that in all aspects of life to use moderation, and I think it is good advice! I have three mares that are heavier W-line mares with G as well (a lot of World Cup I and Garibaldi) and when bred to moderately sized stallions these girls ahve given us very ridable offspring that are strong with good size feet and bone and not too monstrous for the average woman to enjoy.
